Don’t let the title fool you though. This is a practical viewpoint, and not at all based on gimmicks or temporary techniques. It will challenge the way you think about your blog and your business, and give you the actionable and inspirational push you need to grow.

This book came to me at the perfect time. I was struggling with a particular set of problems that had very simple solutions I found just by reading. I definitely recommend that anyone starting a business read The 4 Hour Work Week as one of their first books.

Challenge Your Existing Beliefs

One of the most important things that this book will do for you, especially if you don’t come for an entrepreneurial background, as it will challenge your existing believes. People who think like entrepreneurs do so very differently than those who work for someone else.

If you’ve lived your whole life working for somebody, and your parents also worked for somebody, you may not of had exposure to this type of thinking and ideas. If this is you, the book is going to be very enlightening.

Just reading the ideas and concepts, you’ll find the common way that you’re used to thinking is completely different from how an entrepreneur perceives the same problems. It will help re-frame the way your mind works, and that will make you better at thinking like an entrepreneur.

Make Time to Choose

Another really important part of this book is that it helps you to devise strategies right from the beginning in order to free up as much time as possible for yourself. What you do at that time is completely up to you at that point.

Essentially, the title of this book is based on getting the amount of actual work down to the bare minimum so that way you have the freedom to do what matters the most. The four hour reference is about greatly reducing necessary tasks that can’t be automated.

When you have the freedom to do what matters most when it comes to your business, you can pursue the parts of your business that make you happy, and that you know will create the most growth. This freedom is how you run your business most effectively.

It’s not about setting things up and then just sleeping for 20 hours a day. It’s about setting up your business in a way that you can actually own your business instead of work on your business all the time.

Delegate or Automate the Routine Stuff

Something that Tim teaches in the book is how to delegate and automate the routine aspects of the business that don’t require your immediate attention. Even though it’s your business, not everything requires you to make the decisions.

If you don’t know about the different resources that are available, you’ll be surprised to read that there are so many ways to automate tasks as well as get help from others for tasks that free up time for you to run your business.

This takes the routine stuff off the table, and opens up more of your time to push your business forward as a leader and an owner. The routine stuff still gets done, but you have more freedom to do what matters most.

The Big Goals Have Less Competition

This book has an interesting way of re-framing your thought process. One of the things that I thought was the most interesting was about competition for big goals versus competition for average goals.

Tim Ferriss points out the irony that most people aim low because they’re looking for a goal that they believe they can achieve. Strangely enough, this creates a large mountain competition for the small goals, with virtually no competition for the big goals.

When you think about it, there’s less competition at the high-end than there is at the low and the middle end, so you might as well set your sights a little higher. It may even be easier to achieve the bigger goal than the smaller goal, at least competitively speaking.

Picking a certain goal also frames the way you make decisions. If you had a month to come up with $100 you would do certain things a certain way. If you had to come up with $10,000 in one month, you would make very different decisions.

It’s the goal that helps you make better decisions. Instead of aiming low and walking into the jungle with everyone else, aim high and you’ll only be competing with yourself.

Focus on the One Thing that Solves Many Things

One of my favorites from the book is about looking at the many different problems that you have and then looking for the one thing that could solve the majority, if not all of them.

I used this exact process on my own website, as I was struggling with several different factors that all really came down to traffic. Getting more traffic meant solving all those other problems, so that’s what I focused on, and all the problems went away.

As you look through the different things that your business needs, there will more than likely be several that could be solved with the same strategy. You just need to look for that strategy and get rid of the largest amount of problems at once.

This is a tremendous way of thinking about the different tasks you need to accomplish for your business. After all, if you pick the right thing, and it solves several problems, you’re hitting multiple birds with one stone.

Focus on Your Strengths

So many times in life you will be surrounded by people that tell you to focus on your weaknesses in order to raise them up and improve them. It’s so common that you probably don’t even think about the opposite.

One of the things that Tim Ferriss shares is how to focus on your strengths. While fixing a weakness is a good thing, you can’t forget about your strengths, which are what got you here in the first place.

In fact, if you have the ability to delegate or automate some of your weaker areas, you can get those accomplished without having to change anything about yourself, giving you even more time to double down on what you’re good at.

You are not meant to be good at everything. Read that again and let it sink in.

There are going to be aspects of yourself and your business where you are weak. Even with the best of efforts, there are still going to be things that you just cannot bring up to the level needed to compete in business.

Instead of wasting your time grinding away at something that you could just farm out to somebody else who is way better than you are, focus on being more successful with your strengths, and that will help you find a better way to accomplish the weaknesses.

The 80/20 Principle

If you’ve never heard of the 80/20 principle before, this is going to be quite a revelation for you. The core of the idea is that 80% of your successes come from 20% of your efforts, and if you study the world, you’ll see this ratio all over the place.

If you look at your business, odds are that 20% of your customers result in 80% of your income, or roughly somewhere in that range. You’ll also see that about 20% of your customers cause 80% of your problems.

When you put this ratio to work, it makes it really easy to figure out where you need to focus in order to be the most successful. It also puts into perspective what’s really going on, and how much success or problems you really have.

When it comes to your business, just focusing in on the 20% that creates 80% of the success is going to be where you concentrate your efforts and achieve the biggest results. It’s a powerful business principle, and you’ll learn exactly how to apply it.
