Take Your Own Pictures

There is no stock photo side in this world that is as good as your own pictures. Not only do you never have to worry about finding good images, it’s as easy as pulling out your camera phone to collect them.

You never have to worry about using the same image that’s on 10,000 other websites, and you’ll never have that “stock image” look to any of your photos. Yes, stock images have a look, and they are usually easy to pick out.

The big problem with stock images is actually your perception of the type of images that you need on your website in order to be successful. In reality, images can range quite wildly and still fit perfectly within your post.

Use Your Camera Phone

Definitely do not let the thought of having to buy any expensive equipment prevent you from using your own photos on your blog. While fancy photography equipment is really nice, don’t forget what’s going to happen to that picture before you upload it.

Fast websites need to have small file sizes for their images. This means even if you use a million dollar camera and take a 1000 megapixel image, you’re going to have to reduce it down to something really small and probably a little grainy before you upload it anyway.

Every penny that you spend on this expensive equipment is completely wasted because you’re going to take tons of detail out of the picture before you upload it. Instead, use the camera that’s in your pocket, which is probably better than most cameras you could buy anyway.

The iPhone camera for example is one of the best. Honestly, just about any modern cell phone has a tremendous camera that takes images that are still too high of a quality to put on a website directly.

When it comes to getting your own free images, definitely don’t buy anything fancy, just use your phone.

Taking Blog Pictures

Unless you need something super specific that you can’t physically reproduce yourself, like a tiger jumping through flaming hoops, there is almost no limit to what you can capture with your own cell phone.

If you are looking for the tiger in the flaming hoops, my honest recommendation is to dial back your expectations a little bit. I don’t know what that post is about, but I bet there’s plenty of pictures that could work just as well as the tiger and the fire.

In most cases, general looking pictures like landscapes, skies, textures that you encounter, and other basic shots work perfectly for graphic backgrounds. All you need to do is lay a little text over the top, and it will work perfectly for just about any blog post.

You could also do solid color backgrounds, or even choose to do all of your main graphics as a powerful quote for each of your posts. Again, there is no reason to use stock photography, and you can do so much better on your own.

Email Yourself the Images

The way you get your images from your phone to your website is to email them to yourself. Once you take a lot of pictures, select the ones you like and compose an email.

When you have an opportunity to work on your computer, you can download the images from your email, and then use your photo editing software to touch them up, change their size, and save them in a web friendly format.

Once you have all your pictures edited, now all you need to do is upload them to WordPress and add them to your posts. That part is really easy, and it’s just like uploading any other pictures.

Edit and Resize The Pictures

One of the convenient things about sock images is that you can sometimes choose the file size that you download. This makes the editing process a little bit easier, and it takes out a step.

However, when you have your own pictures, editing them and changing their file size is really not that difficult. All you need to do is use a photo editing program, or you can just go online and use Pixlr to make your edits.

The nice thing about this site is that you can upload your image, play around with the colors and the look, and then save it in a smaller size. This helps with how fast your website will load, and the quicker the website, the better the user experience.

Avoiding Stock Image Sites

Stock images are lame for a million reasons. Not only that, the solution to having your own blog post images is as easy as using your camera phone. You already have all the equipment, and you don’t have to buy anything.

On top of that, you don’t run the risk of having your website look like it was built by a machine, and not having that personal investment can really hurt your readers. You also don’t want them to see the same picture on the last site they just visited.

Finally, most of the free stock images are not even very good. In order to have excellent images, you typically have to pay. That’s just how the game works.

Your Blogging Homework

Now you know how easy it is to get free blog images for your website, it’s time to get your phone out and take action. Start by just taking a bunch of pictures of random scenery, and think of what fits in with your niche while you do it.

Then, start taking pictures of things that are related to your main topic, and you can even take pictures of parts of things as well. For example, as a writer, you could take pictures of a desk, laptop, keyboard, telephone, office chair, drawer, and lots of other things that are in an office.

Even though a pile of sticky notes has no direct relation to writing, when you see a blog post title about writing with a picture of some sticky notes in the background, it doesn’t look out of place.

Avoid the stock image sites, and spend some time learning how to take good pictures and edit them well on a free photo editing program. You’ll be glad that you did, and in the end you’ll never have to worry about the origins of your images.
